Educational Goals and Early Childhood Curriculum

At Edgewood Academy, you will see:

— no lines to stand; only games to play;

— no school games; only preschool games;

— no patterns to follow; only materials with which to create;

— no complicated, abstract meaning that the child cannot comprehend; only ideas and things to talk about, relate to, compare with, match, fit into, try out, invent, discover, and enjoy.

Yet, at all times children are being continuously challenged by the learning goals we set for them.

Our teacher-led program is geared toward helping children develop observation, questioning, and listening habits. It gives them the awareness of their own feelings and their right to express those feelings by sometimes channeling them into other means of expression. They learn that they are free to make choices, and that as long as they stay within limits of consideration for people and things, they do not always have to conform. An open-ended program prepares children to use their intellectual and creative abilities in future learning tasks.

Children at Edgewood Academy will follow a flexible daily schedule, providing plenty of opportunities for indoor and outdoor physical activities, which allow for fine and gross motor development, and opportunities for problem-solving experiences that facilitate concept formation, language development, and sensory discrimination.

Children will have the opportunity to express their own ideas and feelings through creative experiences in all parts of the program, including:

— language learning experiences;

— arts and media;

— dramatic play;

— music, singing, and dancing;

— motor activities;

— exploration and discovery.
