My name is Katia Barker. As a professional teacher with a master’s degree in education, I always had a passion for working with young children. In 2006, as a result of those aspirations, a small family daycare, Mrs. Bee’s Learn and Play, opened its doors. It was licensed to care for six children. In 2009, after successfully running the daycare for three years, we upgraded our license to a group daycare home, increasing our capacity to twelve. Our highly trained, dedicated, caring staff and homelike setting made our daycare the perfect place for children to play, laugh, learn and discover. Thanks to our impeccable record and excellent recommendations, we have always had a steady influx of new families. It inspired us to continue our expansion so we could accommodate more children. My husband has always supported me and helped me along the way. Thanks to his architectural background and skills as a builder, we made a small addition to the existing daycare. In 2013 we were granted a license for a daycare center and increased our capacity to sixteen children. To mark our “graduation” from a small family daycare to a larger educational center we have changed our name from Mrs. Bee’s to Edgewood Academy. In the following years, we continued growing our business, completing 2000 sq. ft addition to the existing facility. Today, having served generations of local children from infants through age five for over seventeen years, Edgewood Academy is a well-known, reputable neighborhood daycare center.

Over the years, we had to overcome a lot of
obstacles, but we never gave up on our dream of building a successful business that benefits the community. In 2017 life dealt us an unexpected blow. Our 2-year-old son Christopher was diagnosed with Ataxia Telangiectasia, a rare fatal genetic disorder that combines the worst symptoms of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, immune deficiency, and cancer. It causes progressive loss of muscle control and lung disease, all while predisposing children to lethal cancers. Children with A-T are usually confined to a wheelchair by age 10 and often do not survive their teens. There is currently no cure. Following the diagnosis, our family has become very active in the A-T world. We are members of A-T Children’s Project, a non-profit dedicated to finding a cure for this devastating disease. Through fundraising campaigns and by regularly donating a portion of our business income, we have raised tens of thousands for our non-profit. After our personal experience, we vowed to turn Edgewood Academy into the kind of business that goes out of its way to make every child feel welcomed, special, and happy and provide the kind of personalized care that allows every child to flourish and achieve their highest potential. We have built a network of childcare professionals, early childhood education consultants, child psychologists, and social workers who are ready to support the families of young children no matter what issues they might be dealing with. Generations of happy children and grateful parents is the achievement that makes us truly proud.
